Jason and the Monster Problem

B&W mockup and color "final" that I drew at age 6 for a book written by my Mother. Cubist!

Well hey there everyone! Nice to see you, nice to see you.

So I've gotten a lot of really great and supportive emails lamenting the lack of activity (ahem, not to mention *files*) here on Scar Stuff, and while I've done my best to catch up with most of them I figured that it's probably well past time for me to post a somewhat more public explanation regarding my absence/ silence/ total lack of awesomeness/ etc.

The short story is that a while back (after a brief period wherein Blogger had inexplicably frozen the site) I was hit up w/ a "Cease and Desist" demand concerning an OOP file I was sharing, and since I preferred to pay for bandwidth and host things myself (rather than utilizing a file hosting service like Rapidshare or whatever) my provider was hit up as well. After a day or two of reflection this led me to decide that I might as well go ahead and delete the majority of the files here and essentially close up (virtual) shop. To be honest the timing wasn't bad; I was finding spare time in my life to be in short supply and since my original intent wasn't much more than to get the "share ball" rolling (trust me, I succeeded *well* beyond any initial hopes I might have conjured up) as well as connect with other like-minded folks, it all seemed to be something close to kismet.

That said, I wouldn't have traded this experience for anything. While I'd never intended for Halloween records to be my main focus (no, really), before I started up Scar Stuff I can't say that I'd ever found anyone else who cared much about them. When I'd tour the US with one of my bands I'd hit the used record stores to see what kind of weird/ spooky audio they had, and was usually met with a response something akin to "meh". When I'd poke around on line for info (or audio) I'd inevitably come up completely empty handed. Yet as soon as I started posting vintage Halloween records myself the response was instantaneous and overwhelmingly positive; across the board I was met with a highly receptive and enthusiastic audience who were anxious to share tons of fascinating info, memories and experiences around this junk. Whether emailing me directly or using the site comments I honestly received nothing but scads and scads of positive feedback (certainly I never had any trouble w/ "trolls" or anything of the sort), and in the intervening time I've seen my LP rips and cover scans (credited or not, I don't really make a distinction), not to mention dorky *passion* for this stuff spread rapidly all over the world. Not bad!

"Kid Dish Originals" that I drew when I was 5 & 6

Another awesome side effect that I didn't expect: I've scored simply tons of cool stuff thanks to the great folks I met here. Over the duration of Scar Stuff's activity people would send me records (either digitally or physically) on a regular basis, and whenever I managed to aquire some long wished for childhood item (like the Gayle Records "Haunting" 7", the Moon Monster poster, or a 16mm print of the Centron Halloween Safety Film in which I had a role as a kid), I was guaranteed a built-in audience of like-minded folks to share it all with. Very, very cool.

So yeah, that's pretty much it. The files are indeed gone but they were snatched by so many folks that I'd think with a little digging people should be able to scare them up online somewhere. Over the years I've occasionally ripped sets of 4 DVDs composed of the Scar Stuff files which I've given to cool people who have hit me up and are working on like-minded projects. As a kind of final "giving back to the community type" thing (and to show my appreciation for all the great stuff this project has brought me), if some enterprising soul out there wants to set up the infrastructure for a "sharing tree" along these lines I'll be more than happy to kick out the first 10 or so sets. To be honest my organizational skills are horrible when it comes to that kind of thing, but for the 2009 Halloween cycle I'll be happy to kick start what I can. It's really a one-time seasonal offer (as I'm sure I'll find that my intentions rapidly fall behind my situational reality), but don't be shy about cooking it all up if you think you can swing it; sharing has been the whole point.

And again, thanks for all of the emails and kind words everyone; I'm glad to say that I'm doing fine. As for me, these days I'm mostly busy with work and a few other projects I've been tinkering with (a book composed of letters to porn stars, a music documentary that I'm v-e-r-y s-l-o-w-l-y piecing together, some new drone/ psych/ audio nonsense, etc), as well as plain old general life. It's good.

Thanks again, and Happy Halloween everyone!

best,

Jason

Your blog is STILL one of the best finds ever, though. Shame it is dead now. It was great stuff.

Jason, thanks for the explanation. I figured a copyright issue caused the files to be pulled. I had hoped that the the stuff was old enough to avoid ire of “The Man.” (BTW the original Night of the Living Dead copyright has expired, so it’s available in its fullness on youtube) Alas, as always, one bad seed had to ruin it for the rest of us. I wish I had downloaded more a few years ago. If anyone has copies of the files and can figure out a way to share them, I would love to hear about it. For the record, I support copyright law, especially for the benefit of the artists. However, this vintage stuff is mostly not available through commercial means. so, hook a brother up and FIGHT THE POWER!!!

I almost died when I saw this post! Ha, thanks for all the great files and Halloween enlightenment. Your blog has shed new light upon "Halloween Spirit" and jump-started my own Halloween records/audio collection. Thanks for all your hard work and time that went into this blog. If any way possible that I could get my hands on the DVDs, I will be more than happy to spread the same joy you have to each and every one of us! Thanks again, and email me if you need anything!

I had pretty much everything of yours on DVD's *somewhere*... I was hoping to get it all again before Halloween this year... :(

Oh well, time to look in the creepy old houses of the internet for them - I want to make sure the nephew has a chance to hear it!

It's been a lot of fun.

PART ONE:

Hi Jason!

We met online 30 May 2002, when you emailed (I save everything and still have every email) me about my "vast Halloween empire", meaning my "Nightmare City Halloween Archive", which by the way continues to grow like mad! You turned me on to "Spook Party" & Ghoul-Arama" which knocked my socks off, and that was just the cover art!!! Later, I hit you up to help me with Frankie Stein and his Ghouls and you graciously shared those too!

I, like you, have had folks all over the planet contact me about Halloween audio -- It should be noted I have been collecting Halloween audio since 1974, in high school, and doing the Nightmare City Halloween program since 1979, and I just can't believe all the like minded folks I have encounter, now that we have this awesome thing called the Internet!!!

For the most part, since Scar Stuff began in January 2006, I downloaded every Halloween file you posted, sometimes skipping the other files and shares and even skipping a few Halloween items I either had or thought I didn't want (Didn't want? Yeah right!! What was I thinking?). Everything I did download was carefully archived and saved, organized by the year and month it was posted by you.

Recently, in early August, another "Halloween" friend of mine (another of the many many friends I've made online) asked me if I had some files from your Scar Stuff blog that were no longer available. Well, I'm a somewhat obsessive compulsive type and that request got me thinking, could I go online and track down every single item you ever posted, elsewhere, that I had failed to get from you, and was no longer avalable via Scar Stuff?

Well, it only took me 4 hours, but I had succeeded in getting everything you ever shared (except two items*) and now have a (almost) complete archive of every share from the entire Scar Stuff site. (Though a few things are not the exact versions you shared.)

*What I failed to locate:

Robert The Robot (posted March 2006)
John Ciardi "What Night Would It Be?" (posted October 2006)

I also couldn't find:
Halloween Sound Effects (Total Records) (posted October 2006)
But I have that on CD and can rip it myself.

PART TWO:

I started a Nightmare City Halloween Blog in March 2009. I have only posted a limited number of files, but all very high quality.

Not many Halloween collectors seem to agree with me, but I hate MP3s and prefer lossless formats (FLAC, APE, WAV) for file sharing, but there just isn't much lossless Halloween out there, so of course I settle for lossy, because I'm not going to pass up a rare gem just because the quality is a bit inferior. For that reason, I have mostly shared highest quality lossy files on my blog. I sure wish more would share Lossless. With the faster Internet speeds we all have and the free sharing sites available, there is just no excuse no to!

Since April, I've had some major computer problems and been busy preparing for the 30th Anniversary of Nightmare City Halloween and lots of other stuff, so haven't posted much other than a recent request to the NCH Blog, but I figure I'll devote more time to sharing Halloween audio outside the Halloween season, because first and foremost, the NCH radio program will always be my priority!

So anyway, buddy, since I already have mostly everything Scar Stuff has every shared I would be willing to work with you or others to set up a permanent archive. If possible, being the stickler/perfectionist I am, I would like to hear from anyone who may have the exact Scar Stuff files I failed to originally download to get my almost complete archive 100% complete!

Finally, I want to give you the props you deserve for being the man who created one of the most awesome Halloween audio blogs the Internet has ever known! Thanks Jason for all the hard work and dedication! You Mash!

Best, Stevo In Yr Stereo

Ps. Today, 25 September 2009, is my 30th Anniversary as a Radio DJ! Tomorrow night will be a big celebration on my Internet radio show, Mind-Altering Music.

Anyone, wishing to find me online can easily find me with a google search.

[Had to post in two part, as I got an error message trying to post the whole thing, though the message didn't specify it was too long. I just figured that must be it!]

Steve,

I think I have all of those files you listed that you failed to locate. Did you ever ask me about them at my Forum? I don't remember as my memory has really gone bye bye lately. I too think that I have ever single file Jason ever shared. Except for maybe osme of the files like "How To Skin A Deer" and stuff like that that I passed on.

I think maybe I am the one who had the "troll" issue that Jason mentioned. So much so to the point that the idiot had Blogspot completely delete my entire Mostly Ghostly Blaaahhhggg.

Anyway, I am still sharing as much as I can although my Dad's death last month really has almost brought my productivity to a complete halt. There are ton's of music files shared at my Forum, but I have them viewable by permission only. So if anyone wants to come by, and collect more Halloween, Children's, Micellaneous Other and Christmas Music and Video shares than you can shake a stick at, feel free to contact me about giving you access to the sections.

Always good to hear from you Jason. Do keep in touch. Thanks for writing to us.

i have been posting stuff from your site(and giving you credit)at my blog for a while now- your site was a real quality-of-life improver for me, seriously. at the time your files were active i did not have a computer that could handle downloading so my great friend Aaron would give me discs of your files. by the time i did get a real computer most of your files were down so i picked then up at Dave's Mostly Ghostly site. since then i have managed to aquire vinyl copies of some of these records that i previously did not know existed and they are prize possesions. i can never thank you enough for your efforts. you've made my day over and over again. ok, i'll stop gushing now...HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!!

p.s. great drawings. i won second place(in my class)in a Halloween poster contest at my elementary school in '66- there were only two entries! the other guy's was so superior to mine it was embarrasing but i learned so much from the experience that my artwork improved to the point where i was considered best of school by the next year...

I stumbled upon your blog and I'll just say "ditto" to all of the comments. Even if you aren't able to post audio files, the research alone is worth the effort.

I'd say that an encyclopedia of Halloween recordings is in order. Have you considered a self-publishing option? I know I'd buy such a book. Thanks for your blog!

I'd like to see that too Mike, but I'm not sure how you'd compile such a thing. Since finding scar Stuff I began searching for Halloween Recordings for myself. I soon learned that, even with the ton of recordings that Jason has to share, there are thousands more that have been released over the years.

I'm thinking about the only way one might get an accurate and complete listing is to go to that guy in NYC (I think) who has the world's largest LP collection in the world. I read an article about it last month, and supposedly he has at least one copy of 95% of every recording that has ever been released. He's currently ill, and trying to sell the collection for 3 Million Dollars.

Jason, thank you so much for this blog! I originally discovered it in april of 2008 and immediately went batshit over all of the great shares. I was born in 1978 and while I grew up with Fango and Gorezone, F.M. and the other Warren mags were already the stuff of legend. I managed to miss out on almost all of these records the first time around but am I ever happy I got a hold of what I could. This stuff has been a constant source of inspiration to me. So much so that I'm working on a screenplay where these spooky sounds records figure prominently into the fractured psyche of the villian. Oh, and the "white witch" from the Centron safety movie has a bit part in it too. Thanks for everything!

Hey Jason,

Since Cool Kooky Hip and Groovy is gone and Mostly Ghostly was forced underground, I decided to share a bunch of your albums that currently don't have links on my blog. Thing is, I've been flying under the radar for years and have no desire to get shut down over a share. Any chance you could give a hint as to which album was the problem? I'm guessing it was the Hitchcock albums, which both appear to have gotten CD releases, but I'd be more comfortable knowing for certain.

Good luck Vinnie. Just an FYI - I see one LP that you might have trouble with right off the bat as one of the people who claims to have written the script for the LP has contacted me directly, and asked me to take down my share of his LP. That is the very first one you shared.

Again, good luck.

Hey, you may be one of the only people that can help find some old Halloween songs I heard back in 1st grade in 1982. Songs titles I'm not sure, but here is a thread I started. You can see the lyrics there:

Any help from you or others would be more than helpful, rather could stop the insanity I've got since I can't find the record.
